Interpol: 37 suspected terrorists arrested in East Africa

Interpol, the international police body, announced Monday that within the past two months, at least 37 suspected terrorists, including members of Islamic State, have been taken into custody throughout East Africa.

The arrests were made in November and December of 2024 during operations carried out in collaboration with the pan-African police organisation, Afripol, according to Interpol, which has its headquarters in France.

Following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, ZINGTIE writes that the arrests coincide with growing concerns about a potential resurgence of the ISIS militant group.

A US Army veteran who was flying an ISIS flag from his truck raced around temporary barriers and crashed into crowds in New Orleans on New Year’s Day, killing at least 15 people.

The global police reported that 17 persons had been arrested as a result of the operations in Africa, including two suspected ISIS members in Kenya and a suspected ISIS Mozambique member in Tanzania.

Other others were arrested in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“East Africa’s complex landscape, marked by political instability, porous borders, and socioeconomic challenges, continues to provide an environment conducive to terrorist activity.

“These positive results demonstrate the power of international collaboration in the fight against terrorism,” Interpol said.
