Iran begins registration for presidential election

The official registration of Iranian presidential contenders to succeed the late Ebrahim Raisi began on Thursday.

According to ZINGTIE, Raisi perished in a helicopter crash in northern Iran together with seven members of his entourage, including Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the foreign minister.

Since then, Vice President Muhammad Mokhber has been designated interim president in accordance with the constitution by Iran’s top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

After Raisi’s untimely death on May 19, the election was moved to June 2024 from its scheduled date of 2025.

There are five days left for prospective presidential candidates to register.

Approximately thirty persons reportedly expressed interest in running, but none fulfilled the requirements.

Candidates must hold a master’s degree or above and be between the ages of 40 and 75 in accordance with Iranian election legislation.

The Guardian Council, a 12-person council of jurists whose members are chosen or vetted by the supreme leader, will reveal the final list of candidates on June 11.
