Iran schedules rerun for July 5 as initial poll fails to produce President

A rerun of Iran’s presidential election has been scheduled for this Friday, July 5, following the conclusion of the counting on Saturday, which resulted in no clear winner.

Out of the four candidates who took part in the poll, Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili were the most popular, but neither of them received the necessary 51 percent of the vote to win.
With more than 10.41 million votes, or 42.5% of all votes cast, Pezeshkian came in second to Saeed Jalili, who garnered 9.47 million votes, or 38.6% of all votes.

The rerun will feature Pezeshkian and Jalili after Islamic leader Mostafa Pourmohammadi (206,397 votes) and Speaker of the Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf (3.38% million votes) withdrew due to their poor performances.

The first round of voting to choose President Ebrahim Raisi’s replacement took place on Friday. Raisi passed away in a helicopter tragedy last month.

In the planned second round of voting between Pezeshkian and Jalili, the winner will be the one who received the most votes, or what is known as a simple majority vote.

In addition to revealing to reporters that 24.5 million votes were cast in the election on Friday, June 28, election spokesperson Mohsen Eslami estimated that approximately 61 million individuals were actually registered to vote.

Eslami clarified that the 24,500,000 voters equated to a voter turnout of roughly 40%, which was reportedly the lowest in the Islamic Republic of Iran’s history.
