INEC declares Zamfara Assembly by-election inconclusive

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the by-election for Kaura Namoda South State Constituency in Zamfara State as inconclusive.

This decision was made public on Saturday by the Returning Officer, Professor Lawal Sa’adu from the Federal University, Gusau, who cited issues of irregularities and cancellations across several polling units as the reason.

He explained that the vote difference between the leading political parties—the All Progressives Congress (APC), which received 7,001 votes, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which secured 5,339 votes—is 1,662. This margin is smaller than the number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected in the affected polling areas, which totals 3,265.

INEC reported that five polling units were affected by the cancellations: two located in Sakajiki ward, where 1,298 PVCs had been collected, and three in Kyambarawa ward, with 1,964 PVCs collected. Overall, 5,446 voters were registered in the impacted locations.

In accordance with the Electoral Act 2022, INEC stated that the election could not be finalized until a supplementary poll is held in the disrupted areas.

The commission noted that a new date for the rerun will be communicated at a later time.
