Mohammed Javad Zarif, the vice president of Iran, resigned, quitting President Massud Pezeshkian’s cabinet just eleven days after he was appointed.
“I am not satisfied with my work and regret that I have not been able to fulfill expectations,” the moderate politician said on his X platform.
Zarif intimated that his decision had to do with choosing the ministers for Pezeshkian’s new cabinet.
Zarif stated that he was not initially in favour of at least seven of the 19 ministers that were selected.
since Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Palestinian militant Hamas organisation, was killed in Tehran at the end of July, Pezeshkian faced his second problem since Zarif’s exit.
As Pezeshkian’s right-hand man during the presidential campaign, Zarif was also crucial to Pezeshkian’s win because of his widespread support.
Zarif and a team of specialists were tasked with creating a list of candidates for government positions who would carry out the promised reforms, nevertheless, following the election.
On Sunday, Pezeshkian unveiled a list that, in the opinion of observers, fell short of the reform’s goals and assurances.
Spectators assume that Pezeshkian was forced to appoint certain ministers by the hardline, arch-conservative faction in Iran.
One of the main players in Pezeshkian’s new foreign policy approach was Zarif as well.
As the leader of the Iranian negotiating team, Zarif was able to seal the international nuclear agreement with the six world powers in 2015 while serving as the nation’s top diplomat from 2013 to 2021.
Pezeshkian planned to resume the nuclear negotiations with him and a fresh group of officials so that the sanctions that are paralyzing the Iranian economy could be lifted.
