Iraq demands termination of UN assistance mission by end of 2025

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has received a request from the Iraqi government to cease operations by the end of 2025.

According to a statement released by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, Iraq’s desire for UNAMI to finish by 2025 is a suitable schedule for a responsible closing, based on the findings of the Independent Strategic Review Team that the UN constituted.

The statement states that in response to Iraq’s request and the recommendations of the Independent Strategic Review Team, the Iraqi government expects a resolution from the UN Security Council by the end of May.

At the request of the Iraqi government, UN Security Council Resolution 1500 created UNAMI, a special political mission, in 2003.

Its mandate is to give advice, support, and assistance to the Iraqi government and people in order to prioritise their efforts towards promoting inclusive political discussion and national and local reconciliation.

Additionally, it supported judicial and legal reforms, the protection of human rights, and regional cooperation between Iraq and its neighbours. It also helped with the electoral process.
