President Donald Trump has argued that it would be unfair to the US if Tesla were to build a factory in India in order to bypass the country’s tariffs.
Trump highlighted India’s high car import duties during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the US but expressed willingness to work towards an early trade agreement to resolve the ongoing tariff standoff.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has long criticized India for its import tariffs of around 100 percent on electric vehicles, which protect local automakers such as Tata Motors in the world’s third-largest auto market, where the adoption of electric vehicles is still in the early stages.
Trump stated that it is virtually impossible for Musk to sell a car in India.
“Every country in the world takes advantage of us, and they do it with tariffs… It is impossible to sell a car, practically, in, as an example, India,” Trump said.
India’s government unveiled a new electric vehicle policy in March, significantly reducing import taxes to 15 percent if a carmaker invests at least $500 million and establishes a factory in the country.
Reports indicate that Tesla has selected locations for two showrooms in New Delhi and Mumbai and has posted job advertisements for 13 mid-level roles in India.
