In an attempt to hide an alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels, the prosecution in Donald Trump’s trial has maintained that the former president “orchestrated a criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 presidential election.”
The prosecution said this in its opening statement for Trump’s criminal trial on Monday.
“There’s nothing wrong with trying to influence an election – it’s called democracy,” the defence retorted.
In addition to hearing the opening statements from each side, David Pecker, the trial’s first witness, was briefly heard.
Pecker was the National Enquirer’s former publisher and a key player in Trump’s alleged criminal activities.
A jury including five women and seven men from Manhattan will consider whether Trump was improper in trying to hide his alleged romance with Daniels, which he thought would hurt his chances of winning the presidency.
Early in 2023, the former President was hauled before the courts on 34 felony counts of manipulating company documents.
