After Japan dismissed rumors that it will establish special visa categories for Nigerians, the federal government led by the All Progressives Congress (APC) came under pressure.

The dispute started when State House Information Director Abiodun Oladunjoye said in a statement on August 22 that Japanese officials had decided to implement “a special visa category for highly skilled, innovative, and talented young Nigerians” for people to live and work in Kisarazu.

Additionally, the announcement implied that the agreement will assist blue-collar individuals who are willing to upskill, such as craftspeople.

Japanese officials, however, have categorically denied the existence of such a plot, drawing criticism domestically.

The African Democratic Congress’ (ADC) national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, criticized the APC government for what he called a last-ditch effort to create sensational headlines.

“At #TICAD9, the APC Federal Government claimed that the Japanese authorities had agreed to issue ‘special visa categories’ to Nigerians. This denial by the Japanese authorities shows that the Tinubu/APC government has become so desperate for positive headlines that they would not mind spreading fake news,” Abdullahi tweeted.

He added: “The truth is, with this government, we don’t know what to believe anymore. This embarrassment just has to stop.”

The event has stoked new worries about Nigeria’s diplomatic reputation overseas and the veracity of government communications.
