Journalist Establishes N2 Million Endowment Fund for University Students

Emeka Monye, the Anambra State correspondent of Arise News Television, has established a N2 million endowment fund for the best-graduating student in mass communications at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The fund, which will run for 10 years, aims to promote academic excellence and scholarship among undergraduates in the department.

Monye, a graduate of the department, unveiled the scheme at the institution on Monday, stating that his decision is driven by a desire to give back to the department and make a positive impact. “I hope that with this development, other well-meaning Nigerians, particularly journalists, would follow suit, to as a matter of urgency, encourage intellectualism in institutions of higher learning,” he said.

The endowment fund will award N200,000 to the best-graduating student in Mass Communications each year. In a letter of acceptance and recognition, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, thanked Monye for his kind gesture and expressed gratitude for the laudable idea.

The letter, signed by Leonard Ezeme, Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of the Career Services Centre, reads: “On behalf of the university Governing Council and the university management, the acting Vice Chancellor once again appreciates the kind gesture of Emeka Monye of Arise News for encouraging academic excellence in our university.”

The university also invited Monye to attend the Prize and Awards Night Convocation Ceremony, where the award will be presented to the best-graduating student. “We are using this medium to advise that you always make yourself available or have a representative present during the Prize and Awards Night Convocation Ceremony,” the letter stated.
