Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has underscored the critical function of journalists in protecting democratic values by ensuring leaders are held to account consistently.
He made this known on Saturday during a two-day capacity-building retreat held in Enugu for members of the State House Press Corps (SHPC).
Delivering the message on Mbah’s behalf, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Ugwu, described the press as the moral compass of the nation.
“As a bastion of democracy, it is essential that journalists must never lose sight of their sacred responsibility to hold leaders accountable and strengthen institutions.”
“In today’s world, where truth is increasingly under assault, your role has never been more critical,” he said.
Addressing the theme of the retreat, ‘Artificial Intelligence Utilisation for Effective Journalism’, Mbah emphasized the need for ethical and responsible media practice.
He encouraged members of the press to adopt artificial intelligence as a transformative tool, while remaining anchored in professional ethics.
The governor also pointed to several tech-based initiatives by his administration, such as the Command and Control Centre for security monitoring and the smart school project.
In his remarks, SHPC Chairman Anule Emmanuel praised Mbah for his forward-thinking leadership and warm reception.
The retreat brought together SHPC members, communication experts, technology professionals, and government representatives.
