Chief Olu Falae, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) of Nigeria, has maintained that he won the 1999 presidential election as the country commemorates June 12.

Falae asserted that he received 1.5 million votes to win the election, and that the late Ambassador Antonio Oladeinde Fernandez verified the outcome for him after allegedly seeing the results in the hands of American officials.

Falae claimed in an interview with Arise Television that because former President Olusegun Obasanjo was a retired Army general, the military had him installed.

According to the former SGF, Obasanjo was chosen as the 1999 presidential winner because the military needed someone who would protect them from criticism.

Falae claims that the military felt uneasy about ceding power to a “thoroughbred civilian.”

“I have no doubt in my mind, and most Nigerians have no doubt whatsoever, that it was I that they voted for.

“I was ready to govern. I had spent my life in public and private service without blemish. I was better prepared.”
