New information has emerged on the actual events of the boat accident that killed Nollywood actor Junior Pope and four other people a year ago.

The boat accident’s findings have been made public by the National Inland Waterways Authority.

In April 2024, the tragedy claimed the life of Junior Pope, who was returning from filming Another Side of Life. According to reports, the boat overturned close to Cable Point on the Niger River in Asaba, Delta State.

NIWA Managing Director Bola Oyebamiji stated during a multi-modal transportation forum in Abuja that the accident was not brought on by a mechanical issue, inclement weather, or impediments in the water. Rather, he blamed human carelessness.

Many Nollywood lovers were devastated by the news of his passing. Many people are now saddened and frustrated by the thought that it could have been prevented if safety measures had been taken.

Oyebamiji claims that several of the boat’s occupants, including those who regrettably did not survive, refused to put on the life jackets that were provided prior to the trip.

Oyebamiji stated: “It was not mechanical failure, not impediments in the water or weather challenges. But purely a flagrant disregard for rules and regulations guiding movement on the inland waterways.”

Public discussion over safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways and why so many tragedies seem to recur has been rekindled by the disclosure.

The MD of NIWA took use of the occasion to exhort Nigerians to always adhere to established protocols and to take water safety more seriously.

He emphasized that in order to guarantee safe passage across the nation’s rivers and waterways, boat operators and passengers must support NIWA’s efforts.

Abraham Gift Johnson, who claimed to have been on board, stated in an Instagram video that he had been too traumatized to talk about the incident until now.

As the shock and anguish of the experience would have prevented individuals involved from giving the genuine testimony, Johnson said, the stories others told in the wake of the catastrophe were probably made up.
