JUST IN: Bishop Ibezim issues stern warning about Nnamdi Kanu

The ongoing detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, has been denounced by Archbishop of the Awka Dioceses and Ecclesiastical Province of the Niger, Most Reverend Alexander Ibezim, who called it a “National Disgrace And embarrassment.”

Since his re-arrest in July 2021, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a British-Nigerian citizen, has been held at the DSS facility. He is currently being tried for terrorism before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

In his presidential address during the second session of the 13th diocesan synod, which was held in the capital of Anambra State, Awka, Bishop Ibezim urged the federal government to free the IPOB leader so that peace might return to the South-East and the nation as a whole.

According to Ibezim, “continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu is a National embarrassment. The synod calls on the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a matter of urgency to release Nnamdi Kanu for peace to reign.”

The Bishop underlined the importance of maintaining justice in the nation by distributing power fairly and advocating for the opportunity for an Igbo to hold a national leadership role.

“Justice delayed is justice denied. Eastern Nigeria has suffered a lot, and for Nigeria to be peaceful, the Igbo must be given a chance in National leadership of the country.

“The truth remains that injustice sets back a nation and once injustice is imbibed into a people, no amount of force can quell it unless justice is done,” he said.

The Bishop also issued a dire warning, saying that the nation is headed towards political and economic perdition and pleading with Tinubu to awaken from his sleep to prevent impending disaster.

He said “Nigerians are enduring immense suffering as the prices of essential commodities soar to higher and higher levels. The unbearable pain of poverty and hunger that Nigerians are forced to endure may result to unbearable situation that may unseat the peace of the nation.”

Ibezim noted that the issue has now been made worse by the depreciating value of the naira due to the foreign exchange crisis and the rising cost of petrol and power. He wondered what steps the nation’s leaders were taking to prevent the impending crisis and danger.

He urged President Tinubu to revise his economic plans, claiming they lacked the fundamental principles that would revolutionize the nation’s economy.
