With the addition of Senator Emma Nwaka, a former chairman of the state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the broom party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) now has more members in Abia State.
Six months prior to his defection, on June 12, 2024, Nwaka “quietly resigned” his membership in the PDP, a decision he later made public on August 30, 2024, citing “personal reasons.”
Nwaka, a PDP candidate for governor in the general election of 2023, had previously raised questions about his APC membership when a photo of him in his Oguduasa Ward 5 obtaining an APC membership card appeared online.
He was handed with an APC membership card by the party’s chairman for Oguduasa Ward 5, Sampson Achi Ndukwe.
Among those in attendance were Chief Udochi Okorie, the APC chairman for Isuikwuato Local Government, and other party representatives.
A political aide of the senator confirmed the development to journalists, assuring that Nwaka would soon speak to the public about his choice.
Following the Labour Party’s victory in the 2023 governorship election, the Abia PDP lost its more than two decades of dominance of the state, and the departure door became extremely busy.
The majority of the party leaders who have so far defected from the Abia PDP have joined the APC, which currently controls Nigeria. One such leader is Chinedum Orji, the immediate former Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
During the period when the Abia PDP controlled the political landscape in God’s own state, Nwaka, who led the party from 2010 to 2015, oversaw its operations.
