Muhammadu Buhari, the former president, has been officially declared deceased.
His spokesperson, Garba Shehu, and his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, posted the confirmation.
The brief statement from Garba Shehu says: “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
During his time as Nigeria’s leader, former President Muhammadu Buhari was frequently admitted to hospitals in London.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari visited the UK for medical treatment at least 13 times between 2015 and 2023.
He spent about six days in the UK in February 2016 on a “medical vacation.”
Buhari also sought treatment for a recurrent ear infection in London from June 6–19, 2016. He canceled a two-day work trip to Lagos State at that time.
President Buhari received medical treatment in the UK for several months in 2017, which sparked a lot of conjecture about his health and even death rumors.
By the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018, a widely circulated conspiracy theory, particularly on social media, asserted that Buhari had passed away and that Jibril, a Sudanese lookalike, had taken his place.
The former Nigerian leader first extended the trip to London for roughly 50–51 days, from January 19–March 10, 2018.
According to reports, he told Nigerians, “I’ve never been so sick in my life,” after receiving a blood transfusion.
Buhari spent 104 days in London during his longest medical journey, which lasted from May 7 to August 19, and his death was suspected due to the lack of official updates.
Buhari also took an extra 16 days of working and medical leave in the UK from August 3–18, 2018.
The former President traveled to the UK for ten days in a private visit from April 25 to May 5, 2019.
He spent another 15-day private visit in London from November 2–17, 2019.
From March 30 to mid-April 2021, former President Muhammadu Buhari resumed his health excursions following the epidemic lockdown.
He attended an education summit and extended his travel to the UK from June to August 2021.
Buhari traveled to London for two undisclosed check-ups in March and October of 2022.
The former president traveled to London for his final known “routine check-up” in May 2025, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Through President Bola Tinubu, he issued a letter wishing the African leaders well to the delegation in Lagos.
A few weeks ago, there were rumors that the former president was at an unnamed hospital in London’s intensive care unit.
He passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Muhammadu Buhari, the former president, will be laid to rest in Daura, Katsina State, his hometown.
Buhari will be buried in Daura tomorrow, Monday, according to TVC.
At 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Buhari died at a London facility while undergoing treatment for an unspecified ailment.
Garba Shehu, his former media spokesperson, revealed this on Sunday through X.
Vice President Kashim Shettima has been sent to London by President Bola Tinubu, who lamented the death of his predecessor.
Shettima was instructed by Tinubu to return with Buhari’s body to Nigeria so that it could be buried.
