Governors do not have the constitutional power to suspend or remove local government chairmen from office, according to a declaration made by the federal government through Lateef Fagbemi, Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Fagbemi made the announcement.

He made these remarks in response to enquiries over the recent acts of Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo, who suspended the state’s local government chairmen.

According to the AGF, any action that violates the autonomy of local governments as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution is unlawful.

“Governors do not have the right to suspend or remove duly elected local government chairmen,” Fagbemi said.

“Such actions are in violation of the principles of democracy and the rule of law,” he added.
