The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has appointed Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya as its new Vice Chancellor, following a rigorous selection process involving 28 candidates. The appointment was ratified by the university’s Governing Council after a transparent and merit-based selection process chaired by Council Chairman, Engr. Kayode Ojo.
According to the university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Agha Egwu, “Professor Ortuanya brings with him a wealth of academic and administrative experience.” Egwu highlighted Ortuanya’s extensive background, including his roles as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Law at UNN Enugu Campus, Professor of Law at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), and visiting scholar at Loyola University Chicago School of Law
Ortuanya’s leadership style has been described as transformational, with a strong emphasis on raising academic standards. He previously served as Dean, Faculty of Law, ESUT, where he improved the academic environment and infrastructure for law students. He also served as Enugu State Commissioner for Education and Special Assistant to the Minister of Information and Culture.
The new vice chancellor is expected to lead the university for the next five years, advancing its mission of academic excellence and innovation. Egwu noted that Ortuanya’s deep understanding of university governance, education policy, and law would be instrumental in achieving this goal.
Professor Ortuanya is a seasoned academic and lawyer, with a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and over three decades of experience in academia and public service.
