Kadaria Ahmed, a renowned Nigerian journalist and media entrepreneur, has established the Rotimi Sankore Scholarship Award in honour of the late Rotimi Sankore, a prominent journalist and social development advocate. The scholarship scheme is designed to support indigent students at Lagos State University (LASU), particularly those studying Communication and Media Studies with a focus on “developmental and data journalism”.

For further information, read more details here

According to the Rotimi Sankore Scholarship Award Panel, the initiative aims to assist students who have completed at least one academic session at LASU and can demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need. The scholarship will cover tuition and accommodation costs for selected students

To apply, students must submit a 200-word personal statement explaining “why the selection panel should consider and nominate them”, alongside supporting documents to rotimisankoreawards@yahoo.com on or before May 1, 2025. Only shortlisted candidates will be invited for a physical interview.

This is not the first time Kadaria Ahmed has invested in journalism-focused education. Through her media company, Daria Media, she runs an annual scholarship scheme, the Mamman Marshal Scholarship for Women in Journalism (MMSWJ), which awards six female student journalists from institutions such as Bayero University, Lagos State University, and the University of Uyo.

The new scholarship commemorates the life and legacy of Rotimi Sankore, known for his commitment to data-driven journalism on health, governance, and policy issues. As Kadaria Ahmed stated, the initiative reflects her commitment to supporting the next generation of journalists and promoting quality education.

Rotimi Sankore was a highly respected journalist, media trainer, and social development advocate who worked tirelessly to promote women’s rights, gender equality, and democratic governance. He made significant contributions to notable publications and played a key role in developing and advocating for important policies and protocols. His legacy continues to inspire and motivate young journalists and advocates
