Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has reaffirmed his commitment to delivering good governance in Kano, dismissing concerns about political pressure or the 2027 elections.

This is stated in a statement that Kano government house’s Director General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, signed on Wednesday.

This declaration comes after rumours circulated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was planning to sway the state’s upcoming elections.

“What I am worried about is not re-election,” Governor Yusuf stated. “I am more concerned about delivering the dividends of democracy on the mandate given to me in this first tenure. I want the good people of Kano to judge me by my performance at the end of this tenure.”

The governor denounced what he called opposition leaders’ attempts to incite political turmoil in Kano. He cited the results of previous elections to highlight the tenacity of his New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), which had won large-scale elections in 2019 and 2023 in spite of the lack of political incumbency at the time.

“We know those people who were massively rejected in both 2019 and 2023,” Yusuf noted. “We won against them at a time when we had no political office—not even a councillor. But Allah made it possible for us to win with a landslide victory.”

He also admonished the APC leadership in Kano against adopting provocative rhetoric, advising them to avoid scaring voters ahead of the next elections.

“I am destined to be a Governor. It is my total belief and submission to the will of Allah that if He so wills, I will serve a second term. If not, I won’t. So why should I bother myself?” he asked rhetorically.

Since the NNPP came to power in Kano, the APC has suffered severe setbacks. The party lost 18 of 26 House of Representatives seats, 26 of 40 State Assembly seats, two senate seats, and the governorship in the 2023 elections.

The governor dismisses political scheming and conjecture about 2027 in his speech, indicating his intention to stay focused on governance.
