The Kebbi State-based Congress for Progressives Change, CPC, bloc has broken off relations with former Justice Minister and Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and stated support for Governor Nasir Idris to serve a second term as the race for the general elections in 2027 heats up.
On Monday, the CPC caucus, led by Alhaji Musa Abubakar and Malakin Kabi, met with important APC leaders in Birnin Kebbi and declared its support for the governor.
The bloc had been a part of the APC since its founding through the 2013 merger under former President Muhammadu Buhari, according to Dan Malakin, who explained the decision to dissolve the CPC structure into the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
“We are already members of the party and cannot be forced into joining the Social Democratic Party because of someone’s personal interest,” he declared in a veiled reference to Malami’s rumoured political moves.
He lamented the fact that he left them behind after becoming power, despite their unwavering support for Malami’s ascent under the Buhari administration.
“We toiled and sacrificed for him. But after becoming a minister, he forgot about us. He only enriched himself and his family, leaving us behind,” Dan Malakin alleged.
Alhaji Atiku Bunu, the state’s previous CPC chairman, echoed the sentiment, claiming that he put his life at danger despite his advanced age in order to secure the party’s win under Buhari.
“With no money or political strength, we gave Buhari 12 million votes under CPC. Yet, we were neglected. No one can decide for us anymore,” Bunu said.
Abubakar Kana Zuru, the state APC chairman, welcomed the bloc and encouraged the returning members to renew their party membership in order to take advantage of all the APC’s advantages.
“You are welcome back home. Though you never left, we urge you to remain committed and avoid hopping between political platforms,” he added.
In his speech, Governor Idris assured the CPC bloc that they will be fully included in his administration and praised them for what he called a brave and patriotic move.
“We are operating an open and inclusive government. Since coming on board, we have prioritised infrastructure, education, agriculture, and other critical sectors,” Idris said.
He urged other good-hearted people to work together to reconstruct Kebbi, admonishing that his government would not allow diversions from those he characterized as opponents of development.
“To those who are not interested in the growth of Kebbi State, we are ready for you. We have the people’s mandate and will not be intimidated,” he stated.
