Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigerian Peoples Party’s (NNPP) 2023 presidential candidate, has vehemently refuted allegations that he may have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), calling them politically driven, inaccurate, and deceptive.
The former Kano State governor disassociated himself from a popular tweet that claimed he had made a deal to rejoin the APC or any other political party in a statement posted on his verified X profile, @KwankwasoRM.
Kwankwaso maintained that he has not officially commented on existing political alignments and called the assertions “products of political mischief.”
“My attention has been drawn to a statement purportedly stating my position on the recurring political realignments. I wish to categorically state that such statements are false, unfounded, and products of political mischief,” he stated.
“I have refrained from commenting on contemporary political events, and I will continue to do so for the time being. I urge the public to only engage statements that come from my public handles and other official sources,” Kwankwaso added.
The retort was made in response to a widely circulated statement that was allegedly signed by Ibrahim Rabiu and stated that Kwankwaso had several meetings with President Bola Tinubu and was being convinced to rejoin the APC.
In an unexpected turn of events, Ibrahim Rabiu, the author of the contentious statement, has publicly retracted it, expressing regret to Senator Kwankwaso and calling the post a “work of the devil.”
“I, Ibrahim Rabiu, wish to inform the general public that I was never authorised by Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso to issue and release a statement on his behalf,” he said in a follow-up message.
“I therefore wish to tender a public apology to his person with a promise that such childish act will never be repeated in the future. Please find a space in your heart to forgive me. I was misled by fake news and agents of misinformation,” Rabiu concluded.
Kwankwaso’s explanation coincides with continuous rumors and reorganizations throughout Nigeria’s political system, especially in the run-up to the general elections in 2027.
