At least 1,230 political returnees from Hon. Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila’s camp have joined the NNPP under the leadership of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s national leader and former governor of Kano State.

Residents of the Albasu and Sumaila Local Governments in the Kano South Senatorial District welcomed the Waraka political returns. On Sunday, they were formally welcomed at a political event at Senator Kwankwaso’s home on Miller Road in Kano.

There were celebrations and fresh appeals for grassroots mobilization in anticipation of the general elections in 2027 during the event, which drew hundreds of party members, political stakeholders, and traditional elders.

Speaking to the gathering, Senator Kwankwaso noted that the Waraka group’s return was another step toward bringing Kano State’s people-focused and ideological politics together.

“NNPP is different from other political party platforms because of our focus on integrity, development and people first,” kwankwaso stated.

“I am always delighted to receive fellow Nigerians who believe in our movement; not because they will gain from my office after the elections as my political offering as seen in the past when politicians earn from their election promises, and like to earn just because of political allegiance.

“This is politics of ideology, not politics of the highest bidder.”

He praised the returnees’ bravery and exhorted them to actively support issue-based campaigns and the development of the party’s structures.

Maryam Romo and Jamilu Zamba, speaking on behalf of the defectors, said they were happy with their choice to return to the NNPP. They attributed their return in large part to Kwankwaso’s leadership style, consistency, and honesty.

“We have realized that this is where our political future lies,” Zamba declared.

“Kwankwaso has always stood by the people. He doesn’t play money politics. He plays politics that uplifts communities.”

In a similar vein, Maryam Romo emphasized how inclusive the NNPP is, especially in providing women with a forum to engage in politics in a meaningful way.

Many people believe that the Waraka group’s return will provide the NNPP a significant political boost in Kano South, a crucial area in the state’s political calculations. Ahead of the next election cycle, political analysts think the huge defection could realign voter allegiance and bolster the party’s grassroots network.

Supporters from Bunkure and Tofa local government areas were also among the defectors, thereby broadening the NNPP’s political base in Kano.

Riding on Senator Kwankwaso’s popularity and grassroots appeal, especially among young people and rural voters, the NNPP continues to establish itself as a formidable alternative in Kano politics.
