The Supreme Court of Nigeria’s historic ruling upholding the rule of law and the integrity of democratic processes in the ongoing leadership crisis inside the Labour Party has been praised by the Liberal Progressive and Patriotic Members Congress, or LPPMC.
According to LPPMC, “This ruling, which nullified the illegitimate conventions orchestrated by the defunct Julius Abure-led faction, is a victory for democracy and a stern rebuke of political impunity.”
A statement issued by its National Coordinator, Dr. Kingsley Okundaye, said, “We stand unequivocally in solidarity with the Sen. Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Political Commission, and members of the former National Transition Committee, whose tireless efforts to restore integrity, transparency, and accountability to the Labour Party have been vindicated by the judiciary.”
The LPPMC praises their “dogged” dedication to saving the party from political thugs who wanted to commercialize it for their own benefit.
By stating that INEC’s statement, signed by Chief Press Secretary Rotimi Oyekanmi, reiterated that the Commission has not made any decisions regarding the LP and emphasized its commitment to studying the Supreme Court judgment before taking lawful action, the LPPMC also applauds the prompt clarification by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on May 8, 2025, dispelling false media reports alleging the recognition of unauthorized individuals as Labour Party leaders.
By rejecting undue interference and honoring constitutional obligations, Okundaye urged INEC to continue its bold and unbiased position, emphasizing that democracy thrives when institutions bravely call a spade a spade.
In accordance with the Supreme Court’s decision, the LPPMC urges INEC to accelerate its review procedure and publicly acknowledge the Sen. Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee as the lawful interim leadership of the Labour Party.
Their recent attempt to suspend duly elected officials like Governor Alex Otti and Senators Ireti Kingibe and Darlington Nwokocha is a laughable charade and “a dead lion’s growl” that lacks legitimacy, the LPPMC said in a condemnation of the desperate antics of the now-defunct Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC), whose term ended on June 8, 2024.
Along with millions of Nigerians, the LPPMC has rejected any plan to sabotage the coalition of progressive forces or impose a one-party state ahead of the 2027 elections. It has also called on civil society organizations, the international community, and all patriotic Nigerians to support the committee led by Sen. Nenadi Usman in its efforts to expose years of corruption under the Abure faction and audit the finances of the Labour Party.
He emphasized the necessity of applying pressure on INEC to take decisive action in identifying legitimate leadership, removing imposters from its portals, and opposing anti-democratic alliances that put their own interests ahead of the freedom of the country.
According to him, “Democracy is not a spectator sport. It demands vigilance, courage, and collective action. Let us build on this momentum to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from predatory elites.”
