The All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos State chapter has harshly criticized Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the general election of 2023, for his recent remarks that characterized Internet scammers, also referred to as “Yahoo boys,” as “geniuses” who simply require appropriate rerouting.
The Lagos APC called Obi’s comment “morally reprehensible” and unworthy of someone who previously aspired to be the leader of Nigeria in a statement released on Sunday by its spokesperson, Seye Oladejo.
A former state governor and presidential contender making remarks that seem to trivialize criminal behavior in a country already struggling with moral rot, according to Oladejo, is disheartening and concerning.
“There’s nothing genius about crime. Yahoo-Yahoo is a social tragedy, not a talent. We are genuinely concerned about Obi’s moral compass, how can someone who constantly condemns corruption also glorify cybercrime? Such contradictions reveal a dangerous moral confusion that has no place in leadership.”
The APC spokesperson also charged Obi with using divisive remarks to gain political attention, calling his stance a “reckless attempt at attention-seeking,” according to Oladejo.
“His desperation for attention has replaced reasoned leadership with reckless speech. There should be a limit to unrestrained desperation,” he added.
Oladejo further claimed that Obi used “propaganda, misinformation, and emotional manipulation” to deceive a large number of young Nigerians during the 2023 elections. He warned that such speech could promote moral indiscipline and encouraged the LP candidate to apologize to the youth for his recent remarks.
The Lagos chapter reaffirmed the APC’s dedication to innovation and youth development while rejecting any attempt to romanticize or rationalize cybercrime. Instead, they insisted that leadership must be based on “values, integrity, and moral responsibility.”
Recall that Obi had stated that many Internet fraudsters had intelligence and inventiveness that, with the right direction, may be directed toward successful endeavors during his remarks to attendees of a youth conference in Onitsha on Saturday.
Emphasizing that “money is only a small fraction of true wealth,” he warned against the careless pursuit of fortune and exhorted young people to prioritize community development, hard labor, and character.
