The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has once again pledged its determination to safeguard Nigeria’s public university system from collapse.
At a media briefing on the Ikorodu campus, the chapter chairperson, Comrade Yisa Oluwatoyin Anthonio, reminded the public that the union’s agitation was not merely about wages. “Our struggle transcends salary disputes. It is about securing the future of higher education as a cornerstone of national development,” he explained.
He pointed out that ASUU’s long-running disputes with the Federal Government can be traced back to the non-implementation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement. According to him, the pact remains crucial because “this pivotal accord addresses critical issues, including fair remuneration, adequate funding for research and infrastructure, and the preservation of university autonomy and academic freedom.”
Reaffirming the union’s stance, Anthonio declared that the LASUSTECH branch will continue to stand firm with other ASUU chapters across the country. “We remain resolute in our commitment to rescuing Nigeria’s public university system from collapse. This struggle is not just for lecturers but for the future of every Nigerian child seeking quality education,” he said.
