According to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the late Awujale of Ijebuland, predicted that Tinubu would win the 2023 presidential election and guaranteed him reelection for a second term.
Tinubu said that the late monarch’s remarks provided him courage and strength throughout his ascent to the president while speaking at the eighth-day Fidau prayer, which was conducted in honor of the beloved monarch at Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode.
“I was successful because of your support and the blessing of the late Awujale. I came to him and he blessed me. He said, ‘You will win that election and you will be re-elected. Go ahead,’”Tinubu said.
Tinubu commended Oba Adetona’s knowledge and integrity, characterizing him as a man of honor, truth, and courage, while reflecting on their long-standing connection.
“Today marks a very great day in the history of our nation, and particularly the Yoruba race. If you want to understand our culture deeply, start from Awujale. You will learn a lot,” he added.
He pointed out that during the fight for democracy, particularly during the June 12 crisis, the king stood solidly with the people.
“During our protests and resistance against the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Baba was always there—steadfast and encouraging.”
With joy, Tinubu recalled that Oba Adetona received the title of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) at the age of 90.
“Very honest, very bold, and very truthful—he would not deceive you,”the president said.
Tinubu had already laid a wreath at the late monarch’s final resting place and visited his family privately to offer condolences.
He urged Ijebuland’s lawmakers and natives to respect the monarch’s legacy by remaining unified and adhering to his principles.
“Kabiyesi was more than a monarch; he was a beacon of hope and a custodian of our culture. We must cherish his legacy and allow the spirit of unity he left behind to guide us,”he said.
Dignitaries from all around the nation attended the Fidau ceremony, including former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State.
Ministers Festus Keyamo, Dele Alake, Bosun Tijani, and Wale Edun were also in attendance, along with Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Senators Solomon Adeola and Seriake Dickson, Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives Ibrahim Isiaka, and Representative Olumide Osoba.
Members of the Ijebu community, clergy, and traditional rulers also showed up in force. At the late Oba’s home, Christian and Islamic clerics performed prayers prior to the stadium event.
The Awujale was a true patriarch, a voice for the voiceless, and a moral compass whose rule brought honor and change to Ijebuland, according to Governor Abiodun’s homage.
“Kabiyesi was not just a ruler; he was a mentor. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” Abiodun said.
