Clinical lecturers at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Nigeria, have embarked on an indefinite strike in protest of unpaid salaries under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

The strike, which commenced on Wednesday, follows the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum issued to the university authorities, demanding full implementation of the salary structure.

According to a statement signed by the Chairman of the LAUTECH Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, Dr. Ruth Ilori, and the Secretary, Dr. Abraham Akinbola, the lecturers were left with no choice but to take industrial action.

“The action became necessary following the failure of the authorities to meet our demands after the ultimatum,” the statement read.

“Only universities in the South-West have failed to comply with the payment structure, leading to brain drain and setbacks in medical education.”

The lecturers are calling on relevant stakeholders to intervene urgently, warning that continued neglect of their demands could have dire consequences for medical education in Nigeria.

They emphasised that the non-payment of their salaries under the CONMESS has led to a brain drain and setbacks in medical education and that only universities in the South-West have failed to comply with the payment structure.
