Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has matriculated 9,772 new undergraduate students into its academic environment. The matriculation ceremony, which took place at the university’s main campus in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, marked the official welcome of the new students into the institution.¹
Professor Razaq Kalilu, the Vice Chancellor of LAUTECH, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategy and Development), Professor Adepoju Ogunkunle, congratulated the students on their admission. He noted that the students were selected from across 35 states in Nigeria and had successfully scaled the university’s screening and registration processes.
Professor Kalilu advised the matriculants to be diligent and obedient to the university’s rules and regulations. “Be up and doing, and be ready to obey the rules, laws, and regulations of the institution to avoid being sent out,” he said. He also assured the students of the university’s commitment to their security, stating that security surveillance devices were being deployed to monitor student activities and prevent undesirable groupings.
The Vice Chancellor also urged the students to focus on their studies, emphasising the importance of academic excellence. At the end of the ceremony, he announced a scholarship for the best 100-level student in the 2023/2024 academic session, Ayoola Taofikat Olamide of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.
In a separate development, Professor Aisha Maikudi, the Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University (University of Abuja), was relieved of her appointment, along with the Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), Governing Council of the institution. The decision was made by President Bola Tinubu, less than six weeks after Professor Maikudi’s appointment.
The removal of Professor Maikudi and the dissolution of the governing council were announced in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, the decision was taken by President Bola Tinubu.
It is worth noting that Professor Maikudi’s appointment had been met with opposition in some quarters. However, the exact reasons for her removal and the dissolution of the Governing Council were not stated in the presidential statement.
The development has sparked reactions from various stakeholders in the education sector, with some calling for more transparency and accountability in the management of universities in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, LAUTECH’s matriculation ceremony marked a new beginning for the 9,772 new students, who are expected to embark on a journey of academic excellence and personal growth. The university’s management has pledged to provide the necessary support and resources to ensure the students’ success.
