Barrister Abubakar Madaki, Chairman of Karu Local Government Area, has offered a “soft landing” to Abubakar Abdulmalik, the embattled Speaker of the council’s Legislative Arm, amid allegations that he misappropriated ₦1.820 million from the council’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

A statement issued Thursday by Madaki’s media aide, Nathaniel Francis, revealed that the offer was presented during a meeting held at the chairman’s residence. Abdulmalik, joined by several community stakeholders, had approached Madaki in a bid to seek leniency, as pressure from residents for his impeachment intensified following accusations of misconduct and impersonation.

As part of the arrangement, Abdulmalik who represents the Gurku/Kabusu Ward is expected to promptly return the misused funds to the local government treasury.

He is accused of unlawfully collecting money from several groups, such as the Bakery Association, shopkeepers at the Koroduma Shopping Plaza, and members of the Wheelbarrow Association, under the pretense of collecting taxes, despite not being an authorized revenue official.

More unaccounted funds were allegedly obtained from vendors at the Yan Tomatoes market on Aso Road, Mararaba, and from traders at Angwan Yan Katsinawa.

Attempts to get Abdulmalik’s personal response have not been successful. However, his spokesperson, Ahuma Sarki, has confirmed the allegations against him.

The controversy has sparked backlash among members of the Legislative Council. Several councilors have condemned Abdulmalik’s actions, claiming he has tarnished the image of the Legislative Arm. They are also demanding a comprehensive probe not only into the alleged diversion of ₦1.820 million, but also into a separate claim regarding the misappropriation of ₦220,000 meant for Duty Tour Allowance (DTA).

Tensions have heightened further after reports emerged that Abdulmalik ignored a formal summons by the Council’s Revenue Committee for questioning.

Councilors insist that if the Speaker is found culpable, disciplinary measures will follow, emphasizing the importance of transparency and responsibility in local governance.
