A global philanthropic coalition has launched the Beginnings Fund, a five-year, $600 million partnership aimed at accelerating maternal and newborn survival in sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative, supported by 10 African countries, focuses on sustainability and local ownership.
The fund will invest in targeted interventions to improve and scale maternal and newborn health, strengthening the workforce and equipping facilities with low-cost, evidence-based solutions. Newborn deaths are a significant driver of mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, where 70% of maternal deaths also occur.
Partners include the Mohammed bin Zayed Foundation for Humanity, Delta Philanthropies, the Children’s Investment Fund, ELMA, and Gates foundations. Beginnings Fund CEO Alice Kang’ethe stated, “African governments, with support from philanthropic and bilateral organisations, are at the forefront of advancing maternal and newborn health and making groundbreaking innovations.”
She added, “The continent is making remarkable strides, but achieving lasting change requires collaborative action.” The fund aims to make a lasting impact on maternal and newborn health in sub-Saharan Africa.
