On Sunday night, a terrible accident at the NYSC Orientation Camp on the Wannune-Gboko Road in Benue State’s Tarka Local Government Area killed multiple lives.
A Toyota Sienna and a Dangote cement truck were involved in the collision.
According to witnesses, the Dangote truck, which was heavily loaded with cement, allegedly drove into the Sienna’s path and collided with it. The smaller car was destroyed in the accident, trapping almost all of its occupants.
An extremely moving description of the rescue operations was provided by one of the first responders on the scene:
“It’s something no one should ever see. We managed to force open the doors, and I tried to save the baby first. Sadly, she was already gone, her tiny legs were pinned under the seat. I gently carried her out… my heart was shattered.”
A number of passengers were not as fortunate as the driver of the Sienna, who escaped unharmed. Rescuers frantically attempted to reach one of the two males who were crushed down in the front seat, who was apparently still alive and struggling for air. The impact of the truck on the right side crushed the body of a woman seated in the middle row, causing her death instantly.
Good Samaritans swiftly extracted the rear-seat passengers through the car’s windows after they suffered just minor injuries.
The difficulty of reaching those who were still trapped made the situation more stressful as the rescue effort went on. The witness claimed that arrangements were being made for a second truck to assist in raising the Dangote car and getting to the victims below.
“My driver called me to say it was time to go, so I had to leave. But when I did, the two men in front and the deceased woman were still trapped,” the eyewitness explained.
Later, several victims’ corpses were transported to Wannune’s St. Christopher Hospital.
Officials have not yet released a formal statement about the incident or the precise number of fatalities as of the time of publication.
