Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French far-right, has been barred from seeking public office for five years.

She was convicted guilty of embezzling European Union funds by a Paris court.

Le Pen was also sentenced to four years in prison with two years suspended by the court; however, she will be placed under house arrest for that time.

Additionally, Le Pen faces a €100,000 ($108,000) fine.

Le Pen’s lawyer has already announced that she will appeal.

For the €4.1 million that it was accused of embezzling, Le Pen’s party, National Rally, RN, was fined €2 million.

According to Judge Bénédicte de Perthuis, Le Pen’s acts constituted a “serious and lasting attack on the rules of democratic life in Europe, but especially in France.”

Le Pen’s immediate restriction on standing for government, according to De Perthuis, was linked to “democratic public unrest” that would arise from electing someone with an embezzlement conviction.
