Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano has voiced his disappointment over Lionel Messi’s suspension.
The former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder criticized Major League Soccer’s decision to sideline his star player.
Messi, 38, missed the Herons’ 0-0 draw against FC Cincinnati in Saturday’s MLS match.
Speaking to reporters at Chase Stadium after the game, Mascherano, who once played alongside Messi, condemned the league’s handling of the suspension.
The MLS commissioner had announced Messi’s suspension just 24 hours before the match.
“I don’t like to speak about other people’s decisions, but it’s strange when something is said one day and the opposite happens the next.
“Messi has played an enormous number of matches. When it’s about selling tickets or filling stadiums, no one complains.
“But now that we had a home game, he’s suspended? Would they have done the same if we were playing away? It’s frustrating,” he said (via GOAL).
Last week, Messi and his former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba both skipped the MLS All-Star match despite being named in the squad.
As a result, they received a one-game suspension under MLS regulations.
