A United Airlines flight en route from Lagos to Washington, D.C., had to make an emergency return early Tuesday after a passenger experienced a medical emergency during the flight.
The aircraft, Flight UA613, departed Lagos around 12:10 a.m. and was approximately an hour and a half into the journey when the pilot urgently requested the assistance of any medical professionals on board to help a sick passenger.
Soon after, the captain notified travelers that the plane would be heading back to Lagos, emphasizing that “safeguarding lives” remains the airline’s foremost concern.
The plane touched down safely at Murtala Muhammed International Airport by 2:26 a.m., where emergency medical personnel were already prepared to provide immediate attention. The affected passenger was swiftly evacuated from the plane for treatment.
In the aftermath, United Airlines officially canceled the flight.
All passengers were eventually asked to disembark and were informed that hotel accommodations would be provided while the airline made alternative travel arrangements.
