A health organisation founded by medical student Ifeoluwa Oyewole, called The Cardio Health, held a free medical outreach in the Aiyetoro area of Makoko, Lagos, providing residents with basic healthcare services and raising awareness about cardiovascular health. The event, which marked the organisation’s second anniversary, offered free health screenings, medical education, and essential items to over 500 people.
According to the organisation, the outreach aimed to provide more than just health checks but also “presence, connection, and showing up for people who are often overlooked when it comes to proper healthcare access.” Oyewole emphasised the importance of early detection and public education on cardiovascular health, stating, “We’re here because people need to know what cardiovascular health really means—hypertension, stroke, high blood pressure; these are silent killers.”
The team provided various health services, including blood pressure and blood sugar checks, BMI assessments, and short consultations. Many residents left with a better understanding of their health status and received food items, clothes, and everyday essentials
Oyewole explained that Makoko was chosen due to the serious gap in health awareness, saying, “There’s a serious gap in health awareness here. Many people don’t even know what blood pressure means, let alone how to check it. These are the places that need us most.”
Rufai Gabriel, a medical student, highlighted the importance of preventive care, stating, “It is important for people to be aware of what they eat, how they feel, and the warning signs they shouldn’t ignore.”
The outreach had a significant impact on the locals, with many expressing gratitude for the initiative. Ayomide Olashile described it as a blessing, while Ronke Matthew appreciated the knowledge she gained, saying, “I learnt things I never knew before today. I didn’t know high blood pressure could cause blurry vision. Now I’m more alert to how my body feels. I’m really grateful.”
The event was powered by a team of passionate medical students and volunteers who worked behind the scenes to ensure every single person felt seen and heard.
