Military to be sent back to the barracks for doing Police job

Professor Usman Yusuf, a former National Health Insurance Scheme CEO, has demanded that the military go back to its barracks and stated that the police should oversee the military’s involvement in internal policing, as demonstrated in Plateau. Along with emphasizing the militarization of democracy since 1999, he asserted that under civilian governance, the military has been more present than it was under the previous military dictatorship.

He was concerned about the situation of the Nigerian police, especially the mobile police, which he saw as a negatively impacted elite branch. He expressed doubts about the military’s current position and emphasized the necessity of state police taking control of local law enforcement.

In an interview with Arise TV, he said,” The mobile police was an elite wing of the Nigerian police that was damaged. But now where are they? They are guiding big Ogas. We need state police to help police our localities. Send our military back to the barracks, what they are doing in Plateau is the job of the police.”

“They are all involving themselves in internal policing, this is not the responsibility of the military. State police will help a great deal in policing our communities and allow the military to go back to the barracks. For more than half of my adult life, we have lived through a military regime. In the civilian regime since 1999 till now, our democracy has been more militarized than during the military regime. We didn’t use to see these many soldiers during the military regime.”
