NANS declares nationwide protest Wednesday, states reason

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared its intention to hold a large-scale protest on Wednesday, July 2, in response to the ongoing shutdown of public primary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement released Monday and signed by NANS President Olushola Oladoja, the student body condemned the prolonged closure, which has persisted for over two months and disrupted the education of thousands of children—especially those from low-income households.

Just last week, NANS issued a seven-day deadline to the FCT Administration, led by Minister Nyesom Wike, demanding the reopening of the schools or face nationwide demonstrations.

“It is very clear that the government’s silence is an act of negligence and apathy towards the educational destiny of the Nigerian child,” said Oladoja, who described the closure as “unacceptable.”

He further criticized the government for ignoring numerous appeals and refusing to engage in meaningful dialogue to resolve the impasse or resume academic activities in the affected schools.

In light of this, NANS has scheduled a protest aimed at pressuring authorities to immediately reopen all public primary schools in the territory.

Participants will gather at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) Secretariat in Area 11, Garki, Abuja, by 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Protesters are expected to wear black attire to symbolize mourning for what NANS described as the “death of basic education” in the country.

“All NANS structures across the FCT and neighbouring states—Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna—are by this notice directed to commence full mobilisation of students, civil society allies, and education rights activists for this mass action,” Oladoja added.

He added that the Zone A and Zone C leadership of the association have been assigned to oversee coordination efforts to ensure broad participation and maximum visibility.

“This protest is not just about education—it is a fight for justice, equality, and the soul of Nigeria’s future,” the NANS president emphasised.
