The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the removal of heads of tertiary institutions found mismanaging the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) students’ loan scheme. This comes as NELFUND is set to meet with Student Union Government (SUG) presidents and NANS executives to discuss implementation issues.
NANS President Comrade Olushola Ladoja expressed concerns over alleged deductions, double collection of fees, and refusal to refund beneficiaries. He stated, “Any vice chancellor, rector, or provost found withholding students’ loans or having any dubious dealings in this students’ loan administration, we will agitate for their going. They must be removed from office
Ladoja lauded the initiative, noting it has reduced school dropouts and improved access to education for low-income students. He added, “While the federal government is trying to do things that will help Nigerians, some people are there sabotaging it. And NANS will not accept that.”
The meeting aims to address concerns and find solutions to issues surrounding the scheme. Ladoja assured that NANS will work with NELFUND to resolve problems and ensure the scheme’s success.
NELFUND’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) have also raised concerns over institutions’ conduct, including withholding information from beneficiaries and demanding payment from students despite receiving funds from NELFUND
