Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has stated that China is drawn to Nigeria’s lithium resources due to the nation’s prominent position in the West African region.

He noted that a Chinese firm is currently constructing two lithium extraction and processing plants within Nasarawa State.

The governor shared this insight during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he discussed the reasons behind China’s growing involvement in Nigeria.

“China is actually now in a clean energy revolution, that is what is happening and China is getting ready to invest a multi-billion dollar in Africa, and in Africa they decided to focus on Nigeria.

“With all the things that are being said they are focusing on Nigeria, why are they focusing on Nigeria? They are looking at Nigeria as an undisputed leader when it comes to the West African market, for instance.

“With a population of over 220 million and the population of entire West Africa of 400 million, with our GDP now going close to $480 billion, they are looking at Nigeria as the right partner,” he said.

He explained that lithium, which is found in large quantities in Nasarawa State and several other regions across the country, has the potential to take over from oil as Nigeria’s primary revenue source.

“The moment we take politics out of it and allow investors to make decisions correctly, then I think Nigeria is in for it. This is another oil that is coming, that is how God has blessed Nigeria in particular and this is the way to go,” he added.

Governor Sule also pointed out that lithium-related projects will open up job opportunities for the people of the state. However, he acknowledged that the number of positions created may not rival those in agriculture.

He further emphasized that the skills and experience gained through employment in these lithium operations will play a key role in driving both state-level development and the country’s broader economic progress.
