Nasarawa State’s tertiary institutions have embarked on an indefinite strike, starting Monday, February 10, due to the state government’s failure to implement salary adjustments and promotions. The affected institutions include Isa Mustapha Agwai I Polytechnic, Lafia; College of Agriculture, Science & Technology, Lafia; and College of Education, Akwanga.

According to a statement signed by JUNSTI Chairman, Samson Kale Gbande, and Secretary, Paul Olotu, “Arising from an emergency meeting held on February 4, 2025, the Joint Unions of Nasarawa State Tertiary Institutions (JUNSTI) have resolved to embark on a two-week warning strike commencing from 12:00 midnight on Sunday, February 9, to Thursday, February 27, 2025.”

The union accused the state government of ignoring their repeated demands and letters, including an ultimatum issued on January 15, 2025. Kale stated that multiple attempts to engage the government in dialogue have failed, leaving them with no choice but to proceed with industrial action. “We have been patient and have given the government enough time to address our demands, but unfortunately, they have refused to listen,” Kale said.

The striking unions include ASUP, ASUCOAST, COAESU, SSANIP, SSUCOEN, and NASU, all of whom have vowed to remain on strike until their demands are met. The strike affects all academic and non-academic activities in the institutions, including lectures, examinations, and project submissions.

The union’s demands include the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage consequential adjustment, promotions, and the newly approved N70,500 minimum wage. They also called on the state government to provide adequate funding for the institutions and to improve the welfare of staff and students.

As the strike begins, students and staff are advised to stay away from the institutions until further notice. The union has promised to keep the public updated on any developments and has called on the state government to take immediate action to address their demands.
