The advocacy group Action Collective (AC) has urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to provide a clear explanation to the Nigerian public regarding his unexpected withdrawal from a presidential investigative committee tasked with probing sexual misconduct claims made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The organization questioned Akpabio’s decision to step down from the panel without offering any public justification.

In a statement released on Monday, the group’s coordinator, Dr. Onimisi Ibrahim, reminded the public that President Bola Tinubu had on April 2, 2025, set up the panel under the leadership of Vice President Kashim Shettima to examine the accusations brought forward by Senator Natasha.

The committee also includes the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi; and one representative each nominated by both Senator Akpabio and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The group emphasized that the panel was established to investigate the gravity of the allegations, which have sparked widespread public concern and national embarrassment.

It noted: “We are surprised to hear that Senator Akpabio has withdrawn from the investigation panel without offering any official explanation. The development has triggered widespread speculation across the country.

“We have gathered that the Senate President cited undue interference by the Executive Arm of government and lack of confidence in the neutrality of the panel as reasons for his decision.

“Is Akpabio saying he lacks confidence in the current presidency or President Bola Ahmed Tinubu?

“We believe that Senator Akpabio owes Nigerians and the world a duty to speak out or step aside as President of the Senate.”
