Kremlin speaks on Trump-Putin meeting

The Kremlin stated on Monday that a potential meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia would be valuable, but clarified that Putin has no scheduled travel plans to the Middle East in mid-May.

Trump, who has vowed to quickly bring the conflict in Ukraine to an end after returning to office, recently mentioned that he and his team have had “very good discussions” concerning Russia and Ukraine.

When Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was questioned by reporters about Trump’s suggestion that he might meet Putin during a possible visit to Saudi Arabia, he confirmed that no such trip is currently planned for the Russian president. However, he acknowledged that “such a meeting is clearly on everyone’s lips.”

“And in many ways we think it is certainly necessary. It has to be prepared accordingly and it requires efforts at various expert levels,” including continued contacts between Moscow and Washington, he said.

Trump is expected to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE later this month to attend a summit involving Gulf region leaders.

Putin has not had a face-to-face meeting with a current U.S. president since his 2021 summit in Geneva with then-President Joe Biden.

However, both leaders have reportedly held several phone conversations this year as the American president pursues diplomatic efforts to help resolve the Ukraine crisis.
