President Vladimir Putin still favors a ceasefire in Ukraine, the Kremlin said Monday, adding that Russia has not yet received answers to some of its main concerns on a truce that US President Donald Trump has suggested.

Trump, who stated that he wants to be seen as a mediator, has stated time and time again that he wants the three-year crisis in Ukraine to stop and has issued warnings about the possibility that it may turn into a global battle between Russia and the United States.

Putin stated last month that although Russia was in favor of a ceasefire proposal from the United States in Ukraine, the fighting could not be stopped until several important conditions were resolved.

The Kremlin said those questions were yet unanswered.

“President Putin does support the idea of the need for a ceasefire, but before that a number of questions must be answered. These questions are still hanging in the air; so far no one has given an answer to them,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

According to Putin, any peace deal must address the issues that Moscow believes are at the heart of the conflict—basically, a struggle between Russia and the West over Ukraine’s future and NATO’s post-Soviet expansion into Russia’s borders.

He added that important issues regarding the verification of a truce would need to be clarified and that the ceasefire would need to make sure Ukraine didn’t just utilize it to regroup.

However, Kyiv was blamed by the Kremlin on Monday for the lack of responses, claiming that it was unable to control a number of its nationalist and extremist factions.
