Some non-governmental organisations have donated educational materials to children living in an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. The organisations, including K2U Gate, Offshore Lab, and Smile Doctors Foundation, visited the camp to celebrate Children’s Day with the children and donated items such as a school box and a library.
The leader of Offshore Lab, Emeka Obiwulu, explained that the school box is equipped with information and communication technology tools, a laboratory, and other learning tools, which can accommodate up to 20 children at a time. “With a nation of about 10 million children out of school, the school box is to help and build education in areas where education has been interrupted by crisis or remote communities,” Obiwulu said
Martins Oloye from K2U Gate said the donated library can seat about 50 children and is equipped with textbooks, notebooks, and other facilities to help the children bridge the educational gap. “The library is equipped with textbooks, notebooks, and other facilities to help the children bridge the gap of what is obtainable in society that has no obstruction to education,” Oloye said.
The Smile Doctors Foundation also provided free oral care to the children during the visit. The organisations praised the state governor for creating a safe and welcoming environment for their activities.
The state Commissioner for Education, Fred Kyan, thanked the organisations for their donation and said the government has introduced a new learning system for IDP children. “It is called palliative measure to bring all learners not to suffer loss by the time they return to their ancestral homes so they can easily be integrated into the mainstream or regular school environment,” Kyan said
