The Nigerian government has approved a budget of N4.5 billion for the purchase of HIV treatment packs to support Nigerians living with HIV/AIDS.
The approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday following their weekly meeting.
The government plans to procure 150,000 treatment packs over the next four months.
Ali Pate, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, highlighted the significance of the approval, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring continuous access to life-saving treatment for those affected by the virus.
The minister also announced that the FEC has established a committee, comprising members from the ministries of finance, budget, defense, and environment, as well as the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), to develop a sustainability plan.
“This allocation is critical for ensuring that those living with HIV continue to receive necessary treatments without interruption.
“This is about ensuring that no Nigerian loses access to treatment during this period of adjustment,” he said.
Regarding the recent changes in US policy, Pate acknowledged Nigeria’s gratitude for the contributions of the US government over the past two decades but emphasized that Nigeria is now focused on transforming its health sector using domestic financing and national systems.
The latest development follows the United States government’s decision to grant an emergency humanitarian waiver, lifting a previous funding pause on HIV treatment in developing countries.
