The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has advised Nigerian citizens to strictly follow the guidelines attached to their U.S. visas and ensure they are used solely for their approved purposes.

This advisory comes in response to concerns raised by the United States over the improper use of its visas by certain Nigerian travelers.

In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, emphasized that holders of U.S. visas must comply fully with the conditions under which those visas were issued.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the general public of concerns raised by the United States Government regarding the misuse of U.S. visas by Nigerians.

“All visa holders are advised to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications.

“U.S. authorities conduct security screening beyond the initial point of entry into the country. Any breach of immigration or other laws can lead to visa revocation or deportation.

“Breach of visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, including removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel,” he said.

Akinlabi noted that U.S. immigration authorities maintain a strict and transparent visa process, and they expect all foreign nationals to observe the country’s rules without exception.

He specifically cautioned Nigerian students studying in the U.S. to remain enrolled in active academic programs and avoid unauthorized absences or withdrawal from school, as such actions could result in visa termination and affect future visa applications.

Additionally, the NIS highlighted that U.S. consular officials have the authority to deny tourist visa applications if they suspect the applicant intends to give birth in the U.S. to secure automatic citizenship for their child.

“The NIS will continue to collaborate with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not included in any expanded visa restrictions.

“We are calling on all Nigerian citizens to comply with U.S. visa rules as such conduct is essential to safeguarding legitimate travel opportunities,” he said.
