The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has urged residents of flood-prone communities in Abia State to relocate to safer areas without delay.

This appeal was made in an official statement released by the NSCDC Abia State Command, under the leadership of Commandant Akinsola Aderemi. The statement, issued at the state headquarters on Friday, was signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Doreen Udugwu.

The Commandant sounded the alarm to residents in vulnerable zones, advising them to take preemptive steps in light of forecasts that certain parts of the state may experience severe flooding.

He cited data from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), both of which have projected major flooding events to begin in August.

To address the looming threat, the NSCDC has activated its Disaster Management Unit. The unit will work in coordination with local area commanders and divisional officers to launch awareness drives across all 17 local government areas of the state.

These community outreach efforts are designed to educate the public on potential flood dangers and promote safety measures to reduce risk.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Abia residents, and I assure the public of our dedication to duty and the unrelenting effort of my officers to protect lives and properties during this period,” said Commandant Akinsola Aderemi.

According to the Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) issued by NIHSA and NiMET, nine local government areas in Abia have been identified as high-risk flood zones. These include Aba North, Isiala Ngwa North, Isuikwuato, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, and Arochukwu.
