About 200 lecturers employed by Abia State University in 2023 are speaking out about the institution’s inability to pay their 12 months of salary arrears. The lecturers’ spokesperson, Chukwemeka Thompson, has appealed to Governor Alex Otti to intervene and settle their indebtedness without delay.

“We were employed in 2023 as staff of Abia State University. We have been receiving salaries, but around June last year, our salary stopped coming,” Thompson explained. Despite completing verification, registering, teaching, grading, and graduating students, the lecturers were told that the government had instructed the Accountant General’s office to stop their salary payments.

The lecturers are pleading with Governor Otti to pay their arrears, just like he did for other ministries and institutions, such as Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in Aba. “We are pleading with Governor Alex Otti to pay us our arrears… He can still consider us and have mercy,” said Dr. Nwosu Nkemakolam Bright and Okpechi Chinemerem, two of the affected lecturers.

The chairman of the Abia State University Academic Staff Union of Universities, Chidi Mba, acknowledged the lecturers’ plight and emphasized the need for their full integration and payment. “Since the State Government approved new staff intake and most of them are qualified and have been teaching, grading, and graduating students,” they should be considered because they are suffering, Mba said.

In July 2024, Governor Otti met with the university management and pledged to begin payment of 13 months of salary arrears in installments, starting from the end of July 2024. However, it appears that the issue remains unresolved, with the lecturers still awaiting payment.
