Following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to remove over 100,000 police officers who were assigned to politicians and Very Important Persons (VIPs), reactions have persisted.

According to ZINGTIE, Tinubu gave the order to withdraw the officers and reassign them to core policing responsibilities, including as counter-insurgency operations, during a security briefing at the State House in Abuja.

This action comes in response to the nation’s worsening security issues.

In order to address these security issues, Tinubu has authorized the hiring of 30,000 more police personnel.

While some have expressed doubts about Tinubu’s directive’s execution, others have praised the president for addressing the security concerns that have existed for ten years.

In a post on X, former federal legislator Senator Shehu Sani stated that Tinubu’s directive “will only begin and end up as a statement.”

He wrote, “Withdrawal of police from VIPs is a good idea and a good policy statement in view of the nation’s urgent security needs, but it will only begin and end up as a statement.”

Security agencies would now “focus primarily on their essential policing responsibilities,” according to former presidential communications assistant Bashir Ahmad, who praised the president.

“President Bola Tinubu has directed the removal of police officers who are currently assigned to protect VIPs,” he tweeted on X.

“From this point onward, law enforcement agencies will allocate their resources to focus primarily on their essential policing responsibilities. This is so good coming from the Presidency.”

According to ZINGTIE, on April 24, 2025, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) issued an order for the removal of Mobile Police officers assigned to VIPs.
